Yarn P0rn!!!

Posted on Tuesday 30 August 2005

I’m a little afraid of what that subject line may bring my way, but oh well. =)

So, last weekend (the 20th), a few of us Knitty girls met up at All About Yarn in Columbia. I picked up a few hanks of Wool in the Woods Double Kiss in Bashful. No clue what it is going to be, but it’s pretty, dammit.

Then, Jen and I went over to The Yarn Garden, where I found a bag of Classic Elite Flash in Cactus Flower on their sale shelves. So, I had to buy it. Again - no idea for what. It’s just pretty.

This past Saturday (8/27), Jen and I and Betsy went to All About Yarn and Stitch DC, and had a grand old time. I was a bad girl.
I bought this:

2 skeins of SWTC Bamboo in Bougainvillea - most likely for a Clapotis for me
5 hanks of Crystal Palace Waikiki in Delphinium (the blue-green-purple one) - This will be a Clapotis for my mom
3 hanks of Manos del Uraguay wool in Agate Multi and 3 hanks in Wildflower Multi - these are currently on the needles, becoming a mitred square bag that I will be fulling.
10 skeins of Elsebeth Lavold Silky Tweed in Purple - as soon as I find a pattern, this will be something for hubby
And 5 hanks of Crystal Palace Waikiki in Fern - see above re: pretty. I need to stop doing that…

I’m making pretty good progress on Kris’s green cabled sweater. About 2 more inches, and it will be time to add the stripe and start the sleeves. Yay! I’m also waiting on my very first order
from KnitPicks, so hopefully I’ll have more yarn to post pics of soon!

Socks!

Posted on Wednesday 24 August 2005

So, I’ve made socks before, but I am very proud of these because they are my first:

1. Toe-up socks
2. Short-row heels
3. 2-at-once on circs

All of which, I have determined, rule. So, without further ado, My Toe-Up-Two-At-Once-Short-Row-Heel Socks!

Patons Kroy Sock in Tutti-Frutti Jacquard, knit on size 2 Addis (my newest addiction - love those Addi Turbos!)

Jayne Hat pattern

Posted on Sunday 21 August 2005

There has been some discussion of the Jayne hats on the Knittyboards of late, so I figured I’d post the pattern I worked out for the hats I made for Kris and Ed.

Jayne Hat

Cascade 220, doubled throughout – 1 skein each in colors 7825 (orange), 9404 (yellow), and 9444 (red) – makes 2 hats

Gauge - 11 sts/4” on
Size 11 circulars and dpn’s

Hat -
CO 52 sts in orange yarn, join and work in K1, P1 ribbing for 3 rounds.
Work 15 rounds stockinette in orange.
Switch to yellow, and work 8 more rounds in stockinette.
Yellow round 9 – *K11, ssk* repeat from * to * around (switch to DPN’s when needed when decreasing)
Yellow round 10 (and all even rounds) – K all sts
Yellow round 11 – *K10, ssk* repeat from * to * around
Yellow round 13 – *K9, ssk* repeat from * to * around
Yellow round 15 – *K8, ssk* repeat from * to * around
Yellow round 17 – *K7, ssk* repeat from * to * around
Cut a long tail and thread it onto a yarn needle. Draw the tail through the remaining 32 sts and pull tight.

Flaps -
Pick up 15 sts on the bottom edge of the hat, using the red yarn.
Work in stockinette stitch for 12 more rows, finishing with a WS row.
Row 13: K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1
Row 14: Purl all sts
Repeat rows 13 and 14 until 7 sts remain, ending with a RS row
To bind off – P1, *slip back to left needle, P2Tog.* Repeat from * to * until last stitch. Cut a long tail and pull through final stitch. Weave yarn back so that it comes out at the center bottom of the flap, and leave a tail for tying the flaps together.
Repeat for second flap, making sure that the flaps are centered opposite one another.

Using all three yarns, make a pompom for the top of the hat.

ETA: Pattern now in sidebar in a printer-friendly .pdf format!

More finished stuff

Posted on Friday 19 August 2005

So, it occurs to me that I finished my Clapotis about a month ago, and never remembered to post any pictures of it.

Here it is, with a teeny smidge of my tattoo peeking out over the top, and a closeup of the actual fabric.

I used Wool in the Woods “Swan”, in that lovely bluey-greeny colorway. The yarn is so soft and yummy…

I also finished my Minisweater! Yay! Here is me, in my Minisweater (Check it out - I actually did my hair for once!):

I used TLC Cotton Plus in Lavender. I changed the pattern a little bit - I skipped the extra increases on the sleeves, so mine aren’t puffy. Because of this, I needed to do more increase rows to get it around my arms. So, my sleeves and body are a little longer than the original pattern.

I also decided to do a different edging (and skip putting it around the neckline altogether). The pattern is “Beauty and the Bead” from Nicky Epstein’s Knitting on the Edge, which I totally adore. The yarn is Red Heart LusterSheen in a color called “Serenity”. I had to go with that theme, and the button I found is a firefly. (OK, it’s actually a bee, but I like to pretend it is a firefly). I will be wearing it to opening night of Serenity, which is of course the movie based on the tv show Firefly. Get it? (OK, cheesy, I know, but I’ll be there with THREE people wearing Jayne hats, one of whom will be wearing this shirt, too) Here is a closer look at the edging, and my little buggy button.

And we got our Knitty Secret Pal matches today! I can’t wait to start shopping for mine!

Tivoli Tee

Posted on Thursday 4 August 2005

Kris is home, so I had him take this pic of my finished Tivoli.

And once I have some more success on the Yarn Diet Diet, it will look much less lumpy around the middle… *sigh*

More FO’s

Posted on Thursday 4 August 2005

I’ve been the finishing queen lately. I frogged the pink Sigma tank that I had started and turned the yarn into a Tivoli tee, which I loooooooove. (Will post pics when I have a photographer here to take some). What an awesome pattern! I cast on in the car going to EdFest, and was done in a week.

I finally finished the purple Baby Bobbi Bear for Clint, and my Branching Out in SWTC Bamboo. I think it looks rather lovely on the bear, but I think I’m going to keep it anyway:

I really like this yarn. I have one more skein in this color (no clue what it is - the label didn’t say, and I can’t find a match on their site), and I think it may become a One Skein Wonder.

I am STILL working on the Green Sweater that Never Ends for Kris. Cables are so very pretty, but they are SO SLOW. I tried to work on it last night, because it was the only WIP on my needles (Wow!), but it was so hot and sticky that the yarn was making me crazy. So, I
cast on a MiniSweater in TLC Cotton Plus. Kris is a saint for being so patient about this sweater…

57 days to Serenity!! Woo hoo!
