Post-Christmas Knitting and Misc. Update

Posted on Thursday 29 December 2005

So, I went yesterday and got the car stuff taken care of. When I went to the emissions testing station, the guy looked up my car, and asked me if I knew that it was overdue. I told him that I never got the notice, and only knew because I had been pulled over for it. So he told me that it had in fact been due in September. Of 2004. How did I never get the notice on this? The post office can get me every stupid offer for a new credit card or to refiniance the house, but they can’t get me something I actually need? *sigh* Anyway, he handed me a form to fill out requesting that the overdue fine be waived. THAT was when he told me about the $260 fine for being overdue. Thankfully, they waived it and it only cost me the normal $14. (Seriously - $14 every two years and a $60 inspection when you first register the car - this is amazing to me, having grown up in PA, home of the $65+ annual inspection) I headed over to the MVA office to request that the suspension be lifted, fully prepared to sit… and sit… and sit, since that is the norm for the MVA office. I even brought my knitting. As soon as I got to the desk and told the woman why I was there, she told me that the suspension is lifted automatically once the emissions people update the system overnight, so it should be gone as of today! Yay!

I got home and was catching up on laundry (seriously - how can TWO PEOPLE create so much laundry?) and I got a fair amount of work done on the Cozy I am making for Kirsten.
I am really loving this yarn. It is KnitPicks Andean Silk in Cinnamon, which is a really lovely warm brown (The above picture is more accurate than the closeup to the right). The yarn is so soft, and yet it doesn’t seem like it is going to pill or get icky at all. I think I may use this when I finally get around to making Tubey - it would be just scrumtious next to the skin, and I think it is the right gauge, etc. It is also showing the stitch pattern really nicely. Speaking of the stitch pattern, I LOVE it! For whatever reason, I have memorized it really quickly, and I have gotten to the point where I can “read” the stitches and know where I should be and (more importantly) correct myself when I am off.

I did get some work done on my Super-Easy Legwarmers (pattern from LMKG) over Christmas, but I got bored with the 1×1 ribbing and am taking a break from them to work on the Cozy. So far, they are here:

Since I am on the tall side, I am just going to keep working them until I run out of yarn. Most likely, the Cascade 220 will go first - there is a lot of yardage in a ball of KidSilk Haze. If I am right, they should turn out to be about 30 inches long when finished. I think the pattern calls for them to be about 26″, so there wouldn’t be much left over. Makes more sense to me to just finish the ball of yarn. They are turning out well and are nice and soft. Kris is still mocking me a little for making them, but I don’t care. I am a child of the 80’s, and I loved my legwarmers back then. I am looking forward to cozy warm ankles as soon as I finish them.

So, I’m off to work some more on Cozy. I got through about 1 ball (out of 10) yesterday, and am almost done with another one today. This pattern rocks!

What I Did On My Christmas Vacation

Posted on Tuesday 27 December 2005

So… this was our low-key Christmas. We (the family, that is) agreed that the gifts would be of a fill-the-stocking nature, since the big gift we are all giving each other is a family trip to Las Vegas sometime next year. So, it was therefore going to be an easy, stress-free trip home, right?

Wrong.

It all started on Wednesday, when I got a text message from my brother, asking when Kris and I were leaving for Pittsburgh. Since he and Janelle were not due to fly from Philly to Pgh until Monday (the 26th), I thought this was an odd question. However, I am used to oddness from Tom, so I told him we were heading out Thursday whenever Kris got home from work. And then I asked why. Apparently, Janelle and her mother were having some issues, and they wanted to see about getting out of there before Monday. Did I mention that they were in NJ, about an hour from Philly, and that I am in MD just outside DC? Being the amazing big sister that I am (and a massive sucker), I got in the car at shortly after 7PM and headed up to rescue them. I pulled into her grandparents’ place (Very sweet people, and not at all the source of the friction) at about 20 minutes after 10. We loaded their stuff in the car, and Tom got behind the wheel for the drive back to Bowie. We stopped at the Wawa for some caffeine, and got on the road.

It was awesome to finally get to meet Janelle (Oh, yes, I hadn’t met her before this, since she and Tom live in California), even though she dozed off partway home. Tom and I got to talk, which we don’t do all that often. He told me more of the saga of their trip to NJ, which all started with landing in the Newark airport and going to pick up the rental car. Tom gave them his license and credit card, and that was when he found out that his license had expired. He has moved a couple of times in CA, and never remembered to send in an address change. So, no car. Hello $200 cab ride. (And I did NOT know this when I agreed that he would drive the return trip to MD)

We were on Route 3, just outside of Crofton, and therefore about 10 minutes from the house, when we passed a police car that was about to turn onto Rt. 3. Tom was (amazingly enough) doing the speed limit, so no big deal. A minute or two later, the red and blue lights start flashing in the mirror. Tom pulls over, and we are a little worried, since he does not have a valid license at the moment. The officer comes up to the window, and says “You weren’t doing anything wrong.” (At this point, Tom and I are both wondering why he pulled us over) He continues, “I ran your plates, and found that your registration is suspended.” This is news to me, since I drive that car just about every day. Apparently, my car was due for an emissions test, and I never got the notice. So, it went past the due date on the test, and they suspended my registration. He had to ticket Tom, but told me that as long as I get it taken care of before the court date on the ticket, he would be willing to drop the ticket at that time. All in all, a little freaky, but the officer was really very nice. He could have been a real jerk about it and towed my car, but he didn’t. He also did not notice that Tom’s license was expired, which was a big “whew!” moment.

So, we get home, and I get Tom and Janelle settled in the guest room. It is now 2AM, and Janelle has an 8AM flight from BWI, so we needed to leave the house by 6:15 at the latest to get her there. My alarm goes off at 5, and I drag myself out of bed, get ready, and we get in the car and take her to the airport. Happily, that went really easily, and she didn’t have any problems.

Tom and I come home, and find that Kris has decided to play hooky from work, which means that we can get on the road to Pittsburgh much earlier. We still had a couple of errands to run, so Kris got dressed and we headed out to Target, etc. Tom decided not to tell my parents that he was coming early, but thought he would warn my mother that Janelle had to go home early to work (which was why she flew out of BWI that morning). So, he calls her from Target and tells this story that he was still flying in as planned, but that Janelle would be leaving from Philly for San Diego instead of coming to Pittsburgh. She tells him that she will probably call to let me know that, since Kris and I were supposed to meet her that weekend.

We finished our errands, and were having lunch at DuClaw so that we could fill the growlers to take home for the weekend when my cell phone rang. It was Mom - telling me that I was going to have to wait to meet Janelle. I was of course terribly disappointed at this news, or so she thought. (Thank you, theatre degree) We hit the road at about noon or 12:30, excited at the prospect of completely surprising my parents with Tom’s early arrival.

We were on the PA Turnpike about a half-hour from home when it happened. Kris was behind the wheel, and the red and blue lights appeared in the mirror once again. He was clocked going 80 in a 65MPH zone. (Now, I am the first to gripe at him about speeding, but I honestly don’t think that he was going 80. 70, maybe 75, but not 80) I am panicked, because I am afraid that the Trooper is going to know that the registration on the van was suspended. (Yes, we were in that car - Kris’s heat is broken, so it wasn’t really an option) He was not apparently able to do that, and he was nice enough to write Kris up for “Exceeding the maximum speed posted” rather than a specific speed, so the ticket was less than it would have been.

We made it to my parents’ house, and Tom stayed in the backseat of the van while Kris and I went in. We asked them to help us get a few things out of the car, and they both put their shoes on and went outside. Kris opened the side door of the van, and Dad spotted Tom. Mom was in the garage, not really wanting to come outside (It was cold!). So, Dad says “You’d better come out here and grab something.” Mom was not pleased with him, until she got over to the car and realized what he was talking about. She said later that the first thing she saw was Tom’s shoes, which are these red Michael Jordans, size 14, and are pretty distinctive. She couldn’t figure out why we had his shoes. Then she looked up and saw him and thought for a split second that it was a dummy, until he grinned at her. She immediately flipped out and started asking me “Where did you get him? Where did he come from?” It was awesome. She and Dad were both completely surprised and were thrown off a bit for the rest of the evening. =)

We had a great weekend, and a really lovely Christmas with the family, although we did miss my cousin and her husband and son, who stayed in California this year. And we managed to avoid getting pulled over on the way home last night. I’ll be going to the emissions place tomorrow morning to get everything straightened out.

I did get some knitting done on my legwarmers while we watched the “Christmas Story” and Law and Order marathons on Christmas Day. I’m about halfway through them, and I should have them done before New Year’s, I hope.

Hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday, and will be having a wonderful New Year, too!

Any love song that starts with the word "fish" has to be a great song.

Posted on Tuesday 20 December 2005

Today’s title courtesy of marymac. (In chat last night, referring to “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” from Showboat.) It was too funny not to be quoted.

So, since I am thisclose to finishing the Satchel for Dad (The strap just needs to dry and be attached), I am looking ahead to post-Christmas knitting. Yes, I know I still have the Retro Throw to finish, but I wanted to bask for a moment. The blanket is still #1 priority on the list, followed by a Cozy I am going to make for my very dear friend Kirsten, who lost her 6-month-old baby boy 10 days ago.

I spent some quality time with my stash list today, looking through the yarn I own and the patterns I want to make, and I was actually able to match up some combinations. New Year’s Resolution #2 for me is going to be to try to either USE what is in my stash, or trade/give it away, so that I am not buried under quite as much of a pile of “I have no idea what that is going to be”. (Resolution #1 is to get involved with a community theatre again. I really miss it.)

- I have decided that the pink and purple SWTC Bamboo that was at one time going to be a Clapotis is now going to be a cape. Specifically, “Dawn of the Cape” from “Ponchos & Wraps - a Knitter’s Dozen”.

- The Classic Elite Flash in Cactus Flower is now designated to turn into Festive from the newest Knitty. It should be a nice Spring/Summer top.

- I finally got Last Minute Knitted Gifts from the library, and I confirmed that I have enough of the Noro Cash Iroha that I found on sale to make THREE Hourglass Sweaters. One each will be made of the light and dark purple yarns, and I am combining the green and camel to make a striped one. Here’s hoping I like the design actually ON me. =)

- When Wendy (The fabulous Zib of the knittyboards) posted the pattern for Serena, I knew I had to have it. I just didn’t know what I was going to make it from. Until I found the Wool in the Woods Capri that has been sitting in my stash for the last 10 months or so. So, I’ll be making TWO Serenas (Serenai?), one each in Oslo and Sundance.

- Since I joined the Legwarmer KAL, I thought maybe I should actually, you know, MAKE some. So, I am using the “Super-Easy Legwarmers” pattern from the aforementioned LMKG, and doing them in a light sagey green Cascade 220, paired with Kid Silk Haze in Drab. I think they will be very pretty. I may take them along when we head to Pittsburgh for Christmas, since they should be fairly mindless knitting, and therefore good for the car ride.

There are one or two other projects I am going to do, but I have to dig out and photograph the yarn for them first. =)

Speaking of, Meeko decided to join me in the craft room while I was taking pictures. Ain’t she cute?

Not sure if I will post again before we head out, so if I don’t, Happy Holidays to everyone!

Bear!

Posted on Wednesday 14 December 2005

Ok, since I promised this to Gretchen and Mtwelovett like, a million years ago, here at last is a picture of my Potbelly Bear (wearing a hat I made from the leftovers from the red poncho):

He’s been MIA for a while, apparently on some secret spy-bear mission. I located him hiding out in the attic when we got the Christmas decorations down. (And why do I think he was out on a mission? Because I LOOKED in the attic, and he wasn’t there before, I swear!) So, that is my much-beloved Bear, who is slightly less potbellied than he started, courtesy of being used as a pillow for many, many years.

Progess bars

Posted on Wednesday 14 December 2005

Based on Kathy’s comment on my last post (hi Kathy!), I thought I would put this info out there for anyone who wants it.

I found the progress bars courtesy of the Knitty Coffeeshop (I can no longer find the original post, of course). I got mine from Unlikely Words, which has a great explanation of how to format them and update them.

You do have to go in and update the percentage numbers when you want them to change, but it only takes a second. I try to update them every day or so, but I’m sort of…um…obsessive about them, which also explains why I like the color of the bar to relate to the color of the knitting project (and be different from any other bar).

Christmas Progress

Posted on Friday 9 December 2005

So, I’ve got 5 out of the 12 squares done for the blanket, and am starting to worry that I am not going to get it done by Christmas. Kris told me to go ahead and set it aside and worry about Dad’s Satchel, figuring that since his Grandmother is Serbian Orthodox, we can send it to her for Orthodox Christmas, which isn’t until January 7.

So, I started Dad’s Satchel this morning, and am just over 10% of the way through it so far. Thank heaven for stockinette on big fat size 13 needles. =) Oh, and did I mention that I ordered some yarn from Elann to make a lace scarf for my family grab-bag gift? Because I really needed one MORE project with a Christmas deadline. I am clearly insane.

I also received another order from the fabulous Sue at Little Knits (shameless plug once again - she rocks!) today. I ordered 3 more colors of the Madil Kid Seta that she had on sale so that I can make (eventually) the very fun Hodgepodge sweater from Knowknits (also the designer of the infamous Swoncho, which I AM going to finish someday). The original (to the left, there) is done in Kid Silk Haze, but when I saw the Kid Seta on sale, I had to go with it. I am doing it in significantly different colors: Light peach, hot pink, lemon, salmon, light pink, and lime, as seen above, to the right (top to bottom, L to R).

It’s going to be a very brightly colored sweater, that’s for sure. :D

The new winter Knitty just came out the other day, and of course I have a bunch of new patterns that I have added to my to-do list. At this point, I should catch up about three weeks after I am dead, especially since Knitty comes out every three months or so, and there are always several patterns I have to add to the list. My faves from this issue are Tempting II, Festive, Tubey, Pomatomus, Thuja, and Marley’s Ghost, and I think that if Hyon doesn’t make Blu for Clint, I am probably going to. (I sent her the link to the pattern, and she is seriously considering making them)

I finally broke the 100-miles-to-go barrier the other day on my biking challenge. I haven’t missed a day since the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. I really think I might make it! Drew is figuring that if I haven’t completed the 500 miles by New Year’s Eve, we might be turning it into a drinking game, with people betting on either what time I will finish, or what mile I will be on at the end of a particular song. I don’t know that I need to be the center of that much attention, so I’m going to try VERY hard to finish before then. If I really crank the next week or so, I might even be able to finish before we head to Pittsburgh for Christmas, but we’ll see.

Nora’s Purse is Done!

Posted on Monday 5 December 2005

Yay! I finished it this morning, and sent Jeff an email to let him know (and to get his address, which I can’t find at the moment). So, here it is.

The details - Knit Picks Wool of the Andes dyed with Cherry, Berry Blue, Grape, Ice Blue Lemonade, and Fruit Punch Kool-Aid, and felted, with beads from my local craft store. Designed based on Jeff’s specs for his girlfriend, with a 4′ strap, and two pockets, one on the front, and one on the inside.

Also, the cone of bright green Cascade220 that I ordered from Little Knits arrived last week. First of all, Sue has the greatest customer service I’ve ever dealt with, and I cannot recommend her store enough. The cone of 220 came with free shipping, and I must have goofed up the code, because it didn’t show up on my order. I was figuring I would just email her and see if she could do anything about it, but before I even had a chance, SHE emailed me about it, and took the shipping off my bill. That rocks! I also ordered some Madil Kid Seta that she had on sale, and it turns out that two of the colors were out of stock. She held my order to check with me to see if I wanted to substitute any other colors, and sent me a free ball of yarn as an apology for the delay on the order. Is it any shock that I have already ordered from her again?

At Monkee’s request, some appropriately silly pictures of the cone of greenness (which is going to become a Samus at some point in the future)
Could THIS be what killed the Wicked Witch of the East?
The Emerald Yarn City
The Great and Powerful Wizard of Yarns (How handy that I collect Wizard of Oz stuff, no?)

And, since we have had pictures of both Simba and Rajah lately, here is Rowena, standing guard at the front window.
Oh, and I’ve done one more square on the Retro Afghan. Might actually make it by Christmas. Here’s hoping.
