Overdue Thank-yous

Posted on Monday 26 February 2007

So, I’m a bit behind on posting these. The fabulous Ali organized a Knitty Valentines Day swap (which of course degenerated into lots of jokes about giving people VD…), and my package from the lovely thistlerain arrived on the best day possible - Feb. 15th, while we were dealing with no power, no internet, moving Kris’s fish temporarily to our friends’ house so that they didn’t freeze to death…. It was a crappy day, and this made me smile:

An adorable Woodstock card, a mini photo album with my initial on the front, a notepaper cube (with a little drawer in the bottom), chocolate (Lindt Milk Chocolate with wafers… mmmm), some Peaches ‘n Cream cotton in a lovely dusty pink, plue, and white mix, and some bright red Paton’s Classic Wool. Thank you thistlerain!!!

Another package arrived while I was dealing with the Comcast mess - my sock swap package from Jenneke!!!
My bee-YOOOOO-tiful socks (which fit perfectly, but I wasn’t putting my feet up on the table, so I’ll have to get a modeled shot later), the pattern for said socks (in case I needed to re-do any part of them), a zipper case with some artwork from a Dutch kids’ book, THREE skeins of sock yarn (all gorgeous), a Grolsch beer postcard (clearly, Jenneke knows me well), and some Dutch goodies - some caramel waffle cookies, salty licorice (apparently a love-it-or-hate-it thing - I’m intrigued but haven’t actually tried it yet), honey vanilla chamomile tea, and Kruidnoten (sp?) - cookies that are only available around Christmas. Thank you so much for everything, Jenneke - it’s lovely, and it’s been a blast getting to know you!

I’ve made some good progress on my Fair Isle cardigan (on stripe #14 of 18 on the body) - I’ll try to get a picture tonight or tomorrow.

Comcast, thou art my nemesis

Posted on Friday 23 February 2007

So, yeah. If anyone was wondering why I missed last week’s Yarn Pr0n Friday, blame Comcast. well, Comcast and the ice storm that hit the Baltimore-DC area last Tuesday.

See, Tuesday night (the 13th), the storm hit. At 11 Wednesday morning, I was chatting online with my hubby and my friend Kaz when the cable went out. We’d had an outage earlier that week, so I didn’t think it was any big deal. I sent Kris a text message asking him to call Comcast to check on it, since he had the number. Then, at 1:30, the power went out. It stayed out until 4:00 on Thursday afternoon (which was a lot faster than it came back for some areas). Luckily, we had already made reservations for our Valentine’s Day dinner out (Yay Melting Pot!) AND the restaurant still had power. We spent a surprisingly cozy night under 5 blankets and a comforter, and woke to a rather chilly house and some really chilly fish in the tank. We called our friends Hyon and Drew, and luckily they had an extra tank that they could set up at their house (that, and they had power). We took the fish, their heater, and their filter over, and spent the day hanging with them. At about 6:00, Kris and Drew came back to the house to check on the dogs and feed them, and I got a triumphant text message on my phone: “We have POWER!”. So, yay - only about 24 hours without, and the house warmed back up surprisingly quickly.

Since we’d been without power, it wasn’t like we could really USE the internet, so we didn’t worry too much about calling Comcast until Friday. They gave Kris about 6 different stories about how it was an issue with the account, an “Area 51 error” (Tell me THAT doesn’t sound like BS…), all kinds of things. Finally, they agreed to send a tech out on Saturday. He was supposed to be here between 8 and 11. At NOON, Kris called them (again) to ask where he was. In spite of the fact that Kris told them EVERY TIME HE CALLED that we have VOIP and if our internet connection is out, our home phone doesn’t work and that the tech would need to call his cell phone, the guy still called the home phone. He finally got them to call the tech and get him to come over, where he spent (I kid you not) 5 minutes looking at the modem and said, “Yeah, it must be a problem with the hard line somewhere. I’ll put in a request for them to check it.”

Sunday comes and goes… still no internet. Monday, Kris calls (AGAIN), only to find that the tech never told them anything about us - no service request for the line, nothing. So, they tell him they will check it. Tuesday, still nothing. He gets them to send another tech on Wednesday, again reminding them that the home phone doesn’t work and that they need to call my cell. I could check voicemail from our cell, so when there is no sign of the tech by 11, I do. Guess who left a message saying that since we weren’t home, we would have to call Comcast (and sit on hold for half an hour) if we wanted to reschedule… Grrr….

At this point, I’ve had it. I no longer care about getting the Comcast stuff back up, I just want to be DONE with it. Happily, we had already decided about a month ago that we were going to switch from Comcast and DirecTV to Verizon FiOS (fiber optic) for our internet and tv. The installation was originally scheduled for last Thursday (the 15th), but they called us on Wednesday to reschedule because of the weather. The rescheduled install? Yesterday. So, since I only had to wait one more day anyway, I just couldn’t deal with Comcast any more. Strangely, I sat here watching tv, and suddenly, at about 3pm, the phone rang. Now, that shouldn’t happen, since we had no internet connection. I looked over at the router, and lo and behold, there it was. We were back. Just in time to ditch them the next day. How’s that for timing?

So, yes, that’s the saga of my last week. It’s been a little insane around here. I’ve been knittyboard-less, and Kris has been without his World of Warcraft. Luckily, we did survive. :D I even got a good amount done on my Fair Isle cardigan! (pictures probably this weekend, along with the ones of all the packages I’ve gotten lately).

And, now that you have slogged though all of that, how about a little yarn pr0n? OK, how about a LOT of yarn pr0n?

First up, a little more souvenir yarn - some Koigu I picked up with Mtwelovett to make myself another pair of Wyvern Socks.

And the “planned project” list (you know, because it wasn’t long enough already…) Someday, these will be…

…Zephyrstyle’s “Rusted Root” in Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece in “Candy Apple”

…Zephyrstyle’s “Green Gable” in Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece in “Raging Purple”

…Zephyrstyle’s “Wicked” in Artyarns Supermerino in color 106

…and Knitty’s “Thermal” in KnitPicks Gloss in Serengeti

So, there you have it, my dears. Another week in yarn pr0n. Until next time! (which hopefully won’t be as long!!)

This is just sorta fun

Posted on Monday 12 February 2007

I found this over on Kit’s blog, so I thought I’d give it a shot. (And don’t panic - it’s a tagless meme. I’m not forcing Turtlegirl to whip out Mimi. ;) )

Directions:
If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?

1. Open your mp3 library
2. Put it on shuffle.
3. Press Play.
4. For every question, type the song that’s playing.
5. When you go to a new question, press the Next button.
6. Don’t lie and try to pretend you’re cool.
7. Don’t skip songs.

My Movie:

1. Opening credits: “Auld Lang Syne” - Billy Joel, 2000 Years: The Millenium Concert
2. Waking up: “Bianca” - Broadway Revival Cast, Kiss Me Kate
3. First day of school: “Do You Hear the People Sing” - 10th Anniversary Concert Cast, Les Miserables
4. Fight song: “It’s Raining on Prom Night” - Original Broadway Cast, Grease
5. Breaking up: “Radio Ga Ga” - Queen, Classic Queen
6. Happiness: “Overture” - Original Broadway Cast, The Drowsy Chaperone
7. Life’s okay: “At Your Side” - The Corrs, In Blue
8. Mental breakdown: “Coyote” - Bobby McFerrin and YoYo Ma, Hush
9. Driving: “Let Me Take You Out” - Charming, Champagne and Magazines
10. Flashback: “Wake Up” - Rage Against the Machine, The Matrix soundtrack
11. Getting back together: “Witch’s Entrance” - Original London Cast, Into the Woods
12. Wedding song: “Kiss Me” - Broadway Revival Cast, Sweeney Todd
13. Birth of first child: “Karma Chameleon” - Culture Club, Totally 80’s
14. Final battle scene: “Dexter’s Laboratory (Closing) - Various Artists, Cartoon Medley
15. Death scene: “I Love a Rainy Night” - Eddie Rabbitt, Like, Ohmigod: The 80’s Pop Culture Box (Totally)
16. Funeral song: “Taste of Things to Come” - George S. Clinton, Mortal Kombat soundtrack
17. End credits: “Mississippi” - Paula Cole, This Fire

And I would just like to point out that the only two that are from cd’s that are really Kris’s? Yup, the one from The Matrix and the one from Mortal Kombat.

Vacation Yarn Pr0n

Posted on Thursday 8 February 2007

By the rules in this article from Knitty, this qulifies as Souvenir Yarn because I bought it at Great Yarns in Raleigh last weekend with Mtwelovett, but I do actually have plans for it. :D

My very first Malabrigo! Yes, I know - it sounds crazy, but I’ve honestly not owned any before now. It’s lovely stuff, though, very soft and squishy! (But not “yummy”, Bezzie - I’m trying to stop using that one so much. ;) ) This is the “Dark Earth” colorway, and the three skeins I picked up are destined to become another Calorimetry (Oh, yeah. I made one out of Paton’s SWS. I just haven’t gotten a picture yet.) and a My So-Called Scarf. If there is enough yarn left, I will probably also make some wristwarmers.

Following along in the same color scheme, I picked up some Artyarns Ultramerino4 in color 105.Very soft stuff, which will be (of course) socks for me at some point.

And two progress shots of my KnitPicks Palette Cardigan (my Fair Isle February project) - three pattern stripes done, 15 to go on the body, plus the sleeves. Honestly, I’m surprised at how quickly it is going so far, but I have to say, I am totally thrilled with it. I’m even looking forward to the steeks! (That would be because I am clearly insane, of course. Happily, I’ve long since accepted and embraced that part of me.)

Closeup!

Once again, Happy Friday, all!

Fair Isle February

Posted on Monday 5 February 2007

Yes, I joined the Fair Isle February knitalong. I am planning to make the KnitPicks Palette Fair Isle Cardigan, but I decided to dip my toes in with a slightly more portable project first - Kris’s We Call Them Pirates hat. Yes, the one I promised him ages ago. I started it Saturday night while we were hanging out at Mtwelovett’s house and finished it this afternoon. It is drying right now while blocking on a mixing bowl. :)

Kris had to also get a nice closeup of one of the skulls.

And lest you think I am a slacker, the reason I started the hat was that….
Jenneke’s socks are done! It’s a little hard to see in that picture, but I did do a picot bindoff at the top of the cuff. So, yes, Jenneke, I’ll be gathering a few goodies to tuck into the box, and then your socks will be on their way!

And yes, you might have noticed that I mentioned “hanging out with Mtwelovett“. She and I have been talking for a year and a half about getting together, so when we found out that the musical of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was coming to Raleigh, we decided that was our sign. I got tickets for Kris and I, and we went down this weekend and had a complete blast with Mary and Robert. I also got to meet Qeltic, too. Heck, my Bear even got to meet his long-lost cousin Teddy. :) Kris got some great pictures, which I will post as soon as he gets them uploaded.

More Fleece Artist Pr0n

Posted on Friday 2 February 2007

The second colorway of the Fleece Artist Merino Sock that we featured last week: “Cosmic Dawn”, chosen by Kris for socks for him. (What can I say? He likes funky socks. Yay!)

Full skein:

Pr0nny closeups:

And my other purchase from Little Knits, some Tilli Tomas Silk Chenille in “Ruby Wine”. This is going to (probably) be the “Luscious Pullover” from Sally Melville’s The Purl Stitch. And hey, she had it for half off, so why not? :)
You should see the uber-closeup on this full sized. You can see the reflection on every fiber. It’s so cool.

Oh, and speaking of socks (and the Sock Exchange) Jenneke finished mine!! Aren’t they gorgeous? Jenneke, I’m working on yours, I swear. I had to give my wrists a break for a couple of days. Working on the size ones was starting to get to them. But I should have them done in the next day or two. I’m on the legs at this point, and I do think I’m going to do a picot bindoff. I’ll post another progress shot after I see how far I get this weekend. And if there is anything in particular you’d love to try that I can get here and you can’t, just let me know!
