Today, we have some lovely Claudia Handpaints Linen in “Blue Fields”

Isn’t it gorgeous? I just picked up a copy of Folk Style today, and I’m thinking that the lovely green shawl in there (Kate Gilbert’s “Paisley Shawl”) might be the destiny of this yarn.Oh, and regarding the blog post title from the last post? It wasn’t size that Steph was talking about so much as… um… on-display-ness, if you will. :D

Charlotte’s Web is still cranking along - I’m almost to the point of doing the final color by itself, and then I just need to do the crocheted edging and block it!

Speaking of blocking, did I remember to tell you about my Mystery Stole? I wore it on Friday, including out to dinner Friday night in Philly. When we got back to the hotel and I tossed it onto the bed, I looked at it and thought it looked odd. It was so hot and humid that night that my stole started to UNBLOCK! I kid you not - the straight section is now narrower than the wing, and the edges are curling a little. Annemarie and I cracked up. So, it’s time for another wash and block. I’m wondering if I can pin and spritz or steam instead of doing a full-on wash, though, because the wing still looks good.

AKA - Philly Knittyfest ‘07. (I’ll explain that title in a bit.)

I was going to write a big long post about the weekend, and recap everything, but then I thought about it. It’s about as much fun to read a blog post like that as being forced to sit through your neighbor’s vacation slides. And I was having too much fun to ever get my camera out, so I don’t even have pictures to show you! Instead, I’m listing all the people who were there (and if I miss you, it’s not intentional! I’m still wiped from the weekend - just leave me a note and I’ll add you) with links to those with blogs and (hopefully) pictures.

Just know that is was an amazing weekend, we laughed ourselves silly, and are already planning to do it again next year. Very possibly in DC. Very possibly organized by yours truly. *Gulp*

The PFK’ers, at least vaguely in the order of their appearance (from my perspective):
Stephie
Roxy
kiddossk
Artsygal
mruiters
Sharon
knittingkitty
Stariel
PinkSkatingGirl
Buttercup
AKKnitter
lunastrixae
js-ATC
Amyknitty
MBT
Sobe

I miss you all already, and I can’t wait for Stitches, or Rhinebeck, or SAFF, or SeaSocks, or whenever I get to see you again. And if you are ever in DC, PLEASE call me.

And before we get to the WIPs for the week - that title. There was enough silliness going on that we decided Friday night that the quotables needed to be written down so we didn’t forget them. The lovely knittingkitty had that job. There were many times through the weekend where someone said something, and it was immediately followed by laughter and a cry of “Emma! Write that down!”

Anyway, we were walking from Rosie’s Yarn Cellar to lunch. (OH MY GOD, Rosie’s. The space is small, but it doesn’t have that overcrowded feeling that small stores can have, even with all of us stuffed in there. And the ladies who run the place are total gems. Really, really nifty. I am definitely going to stop and see them at Stitches East.) At one point, a few people made it across a street before the light changed, and some of us were on the other side. When the light changed, we started across. There were two women who had been waiting on the other side and were now crossing toward us. Erica commented to Stephie that she almost said something to one of them, thinking they were part of the group and were going the wrong way. Steph’s response? That would be the title of this post.

OK, back to your regularly scheduled WIP Wednesday post, with a little SP9 action to boot!

First - the Chevron Scarf. Still chugging along. I just started the second ball of each color.

ChevronScarfWIP8-29
The Tess Ribbon Clapotis - I’m just about done with hank #2 of 3 (you can see what’s left of it in this picture, so that gives you an idea)

RibbonClapotisWIP8-29
And a newcomer to the WIP list - my Charlotte’s Web Shawl.

CharlottesWebWIP8-29
This is something I’ve been planning to do for ages. It came up in various conversations that Chris, Shannon, and Cristi were also all planning to do it, so we decided to have our own little Knit-Along for it once MS3 was finished. Chris and I cast on together at Loop on Saturday, and this is how far I am. The way the pattern works, you do 16 rows in color A, 16 rows of alternating 2 rows of Color A with 2 rows of color B, 16 rows of color B, 16 rows of alternating color B and color C… and so on. I’m halfway through the 16 rows of color D. The FOURTH color. People, this is one seriously addictive knit. The colors are posed there above the shawl from A-E, left to right. It’s all Koigu KPPPM, but I don’t know all of the color numbers, because I lost some of the ballbands.

Monday, as if the weekend hadn’t been awesome enough, parcel #2 from my amazing Knittyboard SP Mostly Harmless arrived. She had the nerve to call this a “small” parcel. She’s nuts!

SP9Parcel2
That’s a hank of Fleece Artist Silk Rumple in a spectacular green, with a pattern for a lovely shawl, a DPN holder, a beautiful pewter shawl pin from PurlGrey (that of course will be fab with the Rumple shawl, because she’s thoughtful like that), chocolates, and a key cover thingy that is a BLACK SHEEP! How funny is that? It makes me smile every time I look at it. Thank you, sweetie! You are the best!

And a little closeup of that fabbo Silk Rumple. Seriously gorgeous stuff.

Happy Wednesday, and I’ll see you for Yarn Pr0n Friday!

In a shocking twist unforseen by the knitting world, a crime against fashion was perpetrated this weekend by superstar Amy R. Singer. She was photographed during an appearance at Loop wearing this… erm… ensemble.

Philly Knitty Fest 030
Clearly, it started to affect Amy’s behavior after a few moments.

Philly Knitty Fest 029
Here, it would appear it had taken over her mind enough to convince her that she could fly.

Philly Knitty Fest 031
No one seemed to know what could have possessed such a normally stylish, lovely woman to appear in public wearing such hideousness. However, our sources indicate that the blame lies squarely with her stylist for the appearance, one known only as “trillian42″, seen here forcing a reluctant Amy into the creation.

Philly Knitty Fest 028
Later sightings of Ms. Singer indicate that she was no longer wearing the offending item, so we can only hope that this was a bout of temporary insanity brought on by ridiculous humidity and an invading horde of Knittyboarders.

- Big, big thanks to Buttercup for the pictures, since I’m a lameass and never got my camera out all weekend, and unbelievably HUGE thanks to Amy for being such an amazingly good sport. I owe you big for this!

Yarn Pr0n Friday - Williamsburg Edition, Week One

Posted on Thursday 23 August 2007

So, last Wednesday (the 15th) Carrie, Maryanne, Carol and I piled into the car and had ourselves a little road trip down to Williamsburg, VA. You can see Carrie’s recap of the trip here - I’ll sum it up this way: We started laughing when we left the house at 8:30 in the morning, and we were still laughing when we got back there at 11:00 that night. It was a great day with three really great women. And I can’t wait to do it again.

While we were there, we spent a good amount of time at Knitting Sisters - a really lovely store run by some really lovely women. I might, perhaps have picked up some yarn while there. I know, I know. You’re shocked.

Here is a shot of my purchases:

DSCN6488
Look! Basket Pr0n!

DSCN6503
This is a Lantern Moon “Rio” basket. Honestly, I’ve seen LM baskets all over the place, and while I thought they were pretty, none of them grabbed me until I saw this one. The instant I saw it, I knew it was coming home with me.

Claudia Handpaints Fingering in Knitting Sisters’ own colorway (light on the left, original on the right). This will be a Jaywalker Scarf, as devised by JavaJem.

DSCN6499
Claudia Handpaints Silk Laceweight in “Walk in the Woods”. Gorgeous, gorgeous stuff. It’s so soft, and it absolutely glows.

DSCN6502
In other news, I finished my mystery stole!

The wing:

A very happy (if slightly dorky-looking) lace knitter:

I love this thing. I can’t wait until my new shawl pin (I ordered the silver swan) arrives and I can decide on an occasion to wear it. :)

And now, I’m off to bed. Stephie is here, and we’re heading out to Philly tomorrow with Annemarie for a Knitty get-together. Kris will be holding down the fort here and hosting a poker night with the boys. I fear slightly for the state of my house when we get back…

Hats for Alex Contest

Posted on Thursday 23 August 2007

Like I mentioned yesterday, the fabulous Weezalana has taken the Hats for Alex project to her (very sweet and generous) heart and is running a little contest to help me meet the goal of 250 hats for this year.

You can see all the details (and the prizes she is offering) here, but let me just say this - Yarn Pirate sock yarn and Entrelac Dangle-free stitch markers. And all you have to do is send three hats before October 31, enclose a note letting me know you want in on the drawing, and give us an email addy to contact you.

I’ll keep the running tally updated here, and I am post-dating this blog post for the end of the contest so that it stays as the top post. Just email me, and I’ll let you know where to send the hats.

Again, thank you all for helping me make this project a success.

WIP Wednesday… sorta

Posted on Wednesday 22 August 2007

OK, I’m cheating a little on today’s WIP Wednesday post. My Mystery Stole is 5 rows + the bindoff away from being done (hopefully later today so I can block it tonight and have pics tomorrow), my Clapotis and Chevron scarf both look exactly the same, only longer. So, no pictures.

Instead, I want to bring up a different project I’ve been working on for a little over a year now - Hats for Alex.* My goal for this year is to collect 250 hats to send. As of today’s mail (Thanks, Poops!), I am at 116 hats so far - 46.4% of the way to my goal. The lovely Weezalana has come up with an idea that she hopes will help us get to that goal, and I’ll post the details of it here as soon as she does. So, please, if you haven’t done so, and you would like to contribute to a project in memory of a beautiful little boy, consider making a hat or two. Contact me, and I can tell you where to mail the hats. And please, spread the word.

Thank you!!!

*For those of you not familiar, I am collecting handknit hats to donate to Children’s Hospital in Omaha, NE. They cared for my dear friend’s baby boy when he was fatally injured by his daycare provider. You can see more details on the Hats for Alex blog I linked to above.

YPF - Visiting Knitty Edition

Posted on Friday 17 August 2007

Last Wednesday (the 8th, not the 15th), I got to add another name to the list of nifty Knittyheads that I’ve met in person. The lovely jpknits was in town with family, and sent me a message on Tuesday that she had a little time before her flight on Wednesday, and would I like to meet up for lunch and a little yarn-fondling. She’d heard my raves about StitchDC, so she wanted to check it out. Happily, I was indeed available, and we met up for a lovely time. We both picked up a couple of things while we were there, and then we headed over to Banana Cafe (where I take everyone if possible), where she treated me to lunch and margaritas (Thank you again, sweetie!!).

First, some lovely Scarlet Fleece Silk & Ivory in a color that I have loved since I found it way back when Maryanne and I went to StitchDC - “Olives and Pimento”:

DSCN6482
Oh, that seems like an odd way to sell it? Well, that would be because I didn’t get a picture of it before I cast on and turned most of it into this:

DSCN6481
Knit and Tonic’s Dream Swatch (That’s a .pdf), which I finished in a matter of a couple of days, have worn twice, and am already planning to make more of. For an action shot or two, check out Carrie’s recount of the adventures from this Wednesday. (There will be future yarn pr0n from that trip in coming weeks)

I also picked up some sock yarn, originally planning something for my SP, but the more I look at it, the more I think it might be a little too contrasty for her tastes. So… erm… yeah. It’ll be something for me. Heh. It’s Scarlet Fleece Painted Merino in “Red Velvet Waters”.

DSCN6487

DSCN6486
And it’s been a week for big ego boosts for me. While we were in Williamsburg on Wednesday, Maryanne picked up some Claudia’s Handpaints in the same colors as my Chevron Scarf to make one of her own, and this morning Amanda informed me that she was ordering some of the Silk & Ivory in the same color as mine to make her own Dream Swatch after seeing mine at DuClaw last night. People think I have good taste in yarn! :D

Well, once Kris gets home from work, we’re off to help Roxy celebrate her birthday this evening. Have a great weekend everyone!

Birthday Pr0n

Posted on Friday 10 August 2007

No, not my birthday - Cristi’s! So, first things first:

*clears throat*

*sings loudly*

Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday, dear Cristiiiiiiiiiiiii!
Happy Birthday to you!

:D

And now, some pr0n. This was sent to me by the lovely Penny_Karma in a swap, along with some other goodies (Rubber duckie notecards, a tape measure, a kickass mix cd… she’s awesome). It’s Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock in “Funky Stripe”.

LLSSFunkyStripe1

LLSSFunkyStripe2

LLSSFunkyStripe3

And thank you all for your compliments on my new jewelry. I’m still totally loving it, and it’s healing up nicely so far. I’m leaning toward the “not saying anything” method of dealing with Mom. I’ve got a month to decide before they come for their visit, though. :)

Oh, and apologies for missing WIP Wednesday this week. I’ve pretty much just been slogging along on the Mystery Stole (love the wing!) and the Chevron Scarf, so nothing much to show, you know? I’ll be better next week, I promise!

I Didn’t Think It Was Raining THAT Hard!

Posted on Monday 6 August 2007

We finally got some long-overdue rain last night, and while it was a pretty hefty storm, I certainly didn’t think it rated Biblical status. Until I went into the kitchen and saw this:

Froggy
Yes, that’s right. There is a frog on my window. Bizarre.

In other news, I did something today that I have wanted to do since I was a senior in college - I got my nose pierced! I didn’t do it then because I knew I had to find a job, and it wouldn’t have gone over well in Meadville circa 1996. Now that I’m at home, though, I’ve been thinking about it, and Kris told me he thought I should go for it. So, today he drove me down to Jinx Proof Tattoos in Georgetown, and ta da!

NoseRing
I’m loving it, and so is Kris. It’s a little silver stud with a sapphire (my birthstone) in it. Of course, now comes the hard part, though.

How do I tell my mother?

This Was The Fest That Was

Posted on Wednesday 1 August 2007

Also known as “Please don’t notice that I have no exciting progress for WIP Wednesday”.

So, yes. This past weekend was the annual event we call EdFest. For those of you unfamiliar, this is a gathering of a group of hubby’s college friends held the third weekend in July (usually - there was a minor rescheduling this year). It has gone on since the summer after their freshman year at Penn State, which makes this year #16.

This year’s fest was held locally (in past years, we’ve all rented a beach house or a ski house for the weekend), with the main goings-on at our friend John’s place outside of Annapolis. However, since we are getting old and generation 2 of the Festers is growing rapidly, the sleeping arrangements were far less “Sleep where you land” and far more “Guest room or hotel”. J and Betsy arrived here from Florida last Tuesday night and stayed with us until Monday. Until the major festivities started on Friday, we spent some time with Hyon and Drew, and Betsy even came to my Thursday Barnes & Noble knitting group.

Friday, Betsy and I were in charge of picking up the food for the weekend, and we may have accidentally fallen into a shoe store on the way to BJ’s. :) I picked up 2 cute pair of wedge sandals, just to have something other than my Crocs and Birks to wear once in a while. While we were out, Big Steve (yes, there is a Little Steve, too, but he and his quite pregnant wife didn’t make it up this year) arrived at the house. We got back and packed up the van and headed over to JMac’s.

I spent most of the afternoon frantically finishing the assembly of the third dragon, because I knew Ed and Karin (parents of Sam, the recipient of said dragons) would be there Friday evening at some point. And yes, I was thoroughly mocked for knitting at EdFest. Everyone DID agree that the dragons were cute, though. Naturally, Ed and Karin arrived before I was done. I shoved everything hastily into my bag (I think I was down to attaching legs and wings at that point) to say hello, especially because I hadn’t yet met baby Sam, who is just adorable.

I did finally finish the dragon and give the set (the dragons and the coordinating log cabin blanket) to Ed and Karin that evening. They were cracking up, because they had no idea that I was working on something for Sam while they were there. They both seemed to really love the dragons, and Karin handed the green one to Sam, who immediately started drooling on it and jabbering away at it. Yay! Baby seal of approval. But yeah… the upshot of this is that I don’t have a finished picture of them. Ed and Karin promised to send some, though. I’ll post them here when I get them.

There was a lot of hugging and greeting Friday evening as everyone arrived (including Kris, who had to work until mid-afternoon and came over afterward). We had a couple of people there who haven’t been for the last couple of years, so it was great to see them, in addition to seeing the people we pretty much only see at EdFest. There was the usual significant quantities of beer, some pool-playing, a little poker, and some Guitar Hero. In one overenthusiastic moment, there was a bit of breakage done to JMac’s ceiling fan with the guitar, but SOMETHING always breaks, and it was cleaned up with no major issues. Eventually (like, at about 1:30am) Kris, J, and Betsy decided it was time to bail, so I grabbed Big Steve and the five of us headed back to the house. The funny thing? Steve and I had both been drinking, the others really hadn’t been. Take a stab at who was up first in the morning, by a margin of a good 2 hours… :)

So, since Steve and I were up and about way before the others (I even had the time and inclination to make pancakes), we headed over to JMac’s earlier than they did. In retrospect, this was a good thing, because when we got to one turn, there was a police car sitting there, blocking the way we needed to go. I pulled up and rolled down my window, and the officer asked where we were headed. I told him, and he said that there was a power line down, so we were going to have to take a detour. He gave me directions, and we headed back the way we came. Luckily, we had the GPS with us, because in his “Take road A back to road B, turn onto road C, which will get you back to road D” haste, the officer forgot to mention road E, which was a key connection from road B to road C. Once we arrived at JMac’s, we discovered that the power line that was down? Was one that included his neighborhood. So, we were without power for a significant part of the afternoon. Luckily, JMac picked up a generator during the nasty ice storm last February, and could at least run the 2 refrigerators to keep the food and beer safe. Also, since we were among the first to arrive (other than those who had stayed there Friday night), and I now had the directions to get around the roadblock, I spent some time on the phone giving those directions to everyone else.

Saturday afternoon, Amanda and her hubby came by for a while, and J even participated in the Testicle Toss tournament, coming in as half of the second-place team. (I think there are TT pics in last year’s EdFest post. Basically, there are two ladders at each end, and you throw a bolo-like thing of 2 golf balls on a string, scoring points depending on which rung it lands on. Don’t ask about the name. I didn’t come up with it.) And yes, Amanda and I were knitting while we watched the tourney this year, as we drank our strawberry daiquiris. :D

Later in the evening, Carrie and Alex stopped by, and we played a little Karaoke Revolution. They also bonded with Drew and Scott over a mutual love for Metallica, and have made plans to go see a Metallica cover band (Battery) together in September. Drew swears that they are amazing, and they are all trying to convince Kris and I to go with them. I doubt Kris will crack (crowds kind of annoy him), but I may yet cave. It’s not really my music (nothing against Metallica, I don’t mind them at all. It’s just not my personal favorite - I listen to stuff I can sing to, not shout with. ;) ), but it does sound like they will all have fun. We’ll see.

J and Betsy had headed back to the house earlier in the evening (J wasn’t feeling well), and Kris started developing a migraine not long after Carrie and Alex arrived, so he headed home. Steve and I decided to stick it out, and Kris said he’d just come back for us in the morning. I ended up crashing on a papasan chair cushion (I’ve slept in an actual chair before, and it’s a recipe for a very stiff neck, so I just dragged the cushion onto the floor.), and Steve sacked out in a slightly less than steady recliner. Of course, the next morning, we discovered that there were in fact a couple of unclaimed air mattresses upstairs, and we could probably have both spent a significantly more comfortable night. *sigh*

We got a lot of cleaning up done Sunday morning, and the house was just about back to normal by the time Kris arrived with a change of clothes for me so that I could grab a shower. Everyone gradually headed out, and by noon-ish, the only folks left were either locals or had a short drive, so we all piled into cars and went to a diner for breakfast. We (Kris, Steve, and I) got back to the house, where Steve got showered and changed, and we hung out until it was time to get J and Betsy to the airport. Since Steve goes right past it to get home to Mechanicsburg, he offered to drop them off and save Kris and I the trip. Their flight was at 5-ish, and at 4:30 or so, the phone rang. It was J, asking Kris to check online to see if there was any information on the flight, because all they were hearing was that it was delayed. It turned out that yes, it did end up getting cancelled, and they got seats on another flight out Monday morning. So, we hopped in the car, zipped over to BWI and brought them back home. We had a mellow evening at the house, me working on my Mystery Stole, Betsy alternating between her MS and the green dragon she decided to make for herself after falling in love with the ones I made for Sam. Happily, I had lots of yarn left, so I could hook her up. (Kris is also hinting that he’d like a red one, so I’m guessing there will be more dragons in my future as well…)

So, that was EdFest in a (rather large) nutshell. I have in fact made progress on both my Chevron Scarf and my Mystery Stole since last week, but as the scarf looks exactly the same, just longer, and the Mystery Stole is still in the neverending stretch of cat’s paw lace/flowers/snowflakes/whatever they are, neither of them makes for particularly interesting photos. I’m hoping to get the stole finished between today and tomorrow, and then I’ll pin it out again and take an official “end of Clue 4″ picture before Clue 5 comes out on Friday.

And now, I’m off to see what my idiotic dogs are barking at in the backyard.
