I Have no WIPs to Show.

Posted on Wednesday 30 April 2008

Not that I’m not working on anything, but the Ribbon Clapotis looks pretty much exactly the same (although it is a smidgen longer), and I am not allowed to show the test crochet project. I’m going to try to finish up the Clapotis on Friday night when my girls get here. (I’m just about to the decreases - 3 more rows)

Until then, I thought I would show you all what happens when you don’t put your weights away and walk around barefoot.

Toe vs. 3-pound weight:

(The middle toe - not the old blister next to it)

So, yeah.  Nice bruise, eh?  Happily, it doesn’t actually hurt much at all today, and since I can bend it without much issue, it would appear not to be broken, because that would SUCK for the cruise.

Wow. Y’all Are Curious.

(And I know someone is going to call me out for using “y’all”…)

Anyway, those “metal things” on my porch aren’t actually metal. They are PVC pipe, painted silver. What are they? A game! Specifically, a game that a friend of ours invented called, erm, Testicle Toss.

HPIM0172

Basically, you’ve got two of these ladders set up, sort of like in horseshoes, and two teams of two people each. One person from each team throws from each end. You are throwing what looks kind of like a bolo, made of two golf balls. Each rung has a different point value. And when they land on a rung and wrap the right way, erm…

HPIM0173

Yeah. That’s how it got the name. :)

It’s very much a beer-drinking game, as you might have guessed. And it is always in attendance at EdFest.

Week 2 Update

Posted on Tuesday 29 April 2008

Weight: 224.2

Bust: 46 (no change)

Waist: 38 (up 1/2″)

Hips: 47 (up 1/2″)

Meh. Gained another 2 pounds this week, and gained back half an inch on both waist and hips. Honestly, I’m not surprised. I’ve been pretty good about working out, but I’ve really been eating for crap. Especially this weekend. Had a bit of a falldown in the junk food aisle at Target.

But! I have been working out, and I can feel a difference when I do the Evil DVD. I even noticed the other day while brushing my teeth that things around the middle are a bit less jiggly than they were. And I’ve been so busy getting ready for MDS&W that I at least haven’t been sitting on my butt.

So - for next week, I’m going to keep working out (probably aiming for a M-T-Th-F schedule, unless I feel particularly energetic tomorrow), and at least attempt to eat a little better. Which means that if any of you see me at Sheep and Wool with one of those giant eclairs, feel free to take it away from me. :D

And just because my life is what it is, I was walking over to the couch just now to post this, and I managed to kick one of the handweights I use for the Evil DVD. Did I mention I was barefoot? So, yeah, the toes are a little sore at the moment. D’oh.

All I know is, it better be freaking GONE by Saturday.

HPIM0169

I feel like I need an ark today.

Oh, and the red Jeep? Yeah - that’s Serenity. As in, she of the leaking windshield. Sitting out in the rain. Again.  Eesh.

Plumbing Update

Posted on Sunday 27 April 2008

So, I’m trying to get the house ready for an influx of crazy knitter friends this weekend for Maryland Sheep and Wool, and I throw in a load of laundry. By this point, you know what’s coming, don’t you?

Yup - f’er backed up again and spewed rinse water all over the floor. We heard it and both SPRINTED to the laundry room, where I paused the washer and we started throwing down towels to soak up the water.

By this point, I’ve had it with this whole issue, so Kris and I called the plumbers (same people who helped us with the tree-root issue last November). When Kris explained the situation to the lovely fellow who came over, he said that it’s actually not an uncommon problem with houses set up like ours - the laundry drain goes into the same pipe as the kitchen sink drain. So, the normal buildup that happens when you put food and grease down the disposal apparently combines with the bits of fuzz that come off your clothes in the washer. It forms this nasty clog and will eventually cause some drainage issues.

Happily, it looks like he’s got most of it dealt with with his plumber’s snake, and we should be back in business ASAP. Which means I can finish the washing of our comforter, which needed to be done because of some issues with a very dumb dog who likes to eat the nasty things she finds in the yard and then get sick because of it. Including all over my damn bed. *sigh*

And we’re definitely going to check with him to see if there is anything he suggests to keep the issues with this to a minimum. I really don’t want to have to call him again. :)

ETA:  He gave us some enzyme stuff that we are supposed to use every night for the next week, and then once a month after that.  It should keep the pipes nice and clean.  And I did finish that load of laundry with no overflowing.  Woohoo!

Saturday Evening Adventures

Posted on Saturday 26 April 2008

So, in yesterday’s mail, we got a menu from a new local restaurant - East Moon Asian Bistro. I looked over the menu and thought it looked damn good, so Kris and I decided that, since they deliver, we’d try them. I called to place an order, and was told that actually, they weren’t open yet and would be opening for business today.

We decided to try them out tonight instead. We knew it was their first night, and when we got there, we saw that the staff looked a bit frazzled. So, we expected a few roadbumps during dinner. We didn’t have anywhere to be, so we just relaxed and chatted while waiting for our food. Sadly, we did see a few other customers who were far less patient. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they didn’t know that this was actually the very first night they were open.

Anyway, I had chicken in crisp lettuce wraps as an appetizer, and OMG. I could have eaten bucketsful. The chicken filling was so yummy. Kris had the Thai spring rolls, which had HUGE shrimp in them. He said they were amazing. For dinner, I had a Vietnamese rice noodle bowl with chicken. There was a ton of chicken, simply but perfectly grilled, with noodles and veggies. Kris decided to try some sushi. He ordered the East Moon roll and some spicy yellowtail. The East Moon roll had tempura shrimp, lettuce, cucumber, scallion, celery, and jalapeno. He said it was absolutely the best sushi he’s ever had. I did snag a piece of the spicy yellowtail, and it was excellent.

HPIM0166

That’s the last two pieces of the yellowtail in the front, and the East Moon roll in the back. (Pardon the colors - the light wasn’t that bright and I didn’t use the flash because it was weird enough to be taking a picture of the sushi.)

Before we left, we flagged down the manager and waved him over to our table. Before we could say anything, he started to apologize, because it was their first night. We told him that we knew that, since I had called the day before, and that we understood there were some bumps, but that the food was wonderful and that we would be back. He looked so relieved and happy that we were actually NOT complaining that I made up my mind then and there - I’ve got a new purpose in life. I am going to be an anti-complainer. So many times, we are all quick to complain when something isn’t right, and yet most of us don’t bother to let anyone know when things are good. So, I’ve decided to change that in my life. When I get great service from a waiter or waitress, I’m going to tell the manager. When a store employee is helpful above and beyond their job duties, I’m going to tell the manager. There is so much negativity in the world, and I am going to make an effort to put a little extra positive energy out there.

On the way home, we stopped so that Kris could gas up, and since his car was covered in pine pollen he decided to run it through the car wash as well (Let’s not discuss the ridiculous rainstorm we are now experiencing…). What you don’t know is that Kris recently bought a used Jeep Cherokee, and this is the car we were driving. He’d noticed before that it leaked above the dash when it had been raining, but could never find where the leak was. We found out pretty damn fast exactly where it was.

HPIM0167

That would be the wad of napkins that were in his glove compartment, holding back the stream of water pouring in through the leak in the seal around his windshield. By the end of the wash, we had two wads, both just about soaked through. He’s on his computer right now, looking for someplace that can fix it on Monday.

So, that was my thrilling Saturday.  Anyone else have any adventures?  :)

Yaaaaaarrrrrn Pr0n

Posted on Friday 25 April 2008

OK, ok, I hope you’ll forgive me the awful pirate pun.

HPIM0150

I picked up this Malabrigo Worsted when Aija was destashing a while ago, because I couldn’t resist the idea of a Malabrigo sweater for Kris in “Tortuga”.

HPIM0151

You know, the island from Pirates of the Caribbean? So, yeah, hence the bad pun.

Oh well, I figure it will go well with his socks. :D

Another One Bites The Dust

Posted on Thursday 24 April 2008

Remember my buddy Steve that I told you about the other day?  The one whose letter was published on The Consumerist?

We’ve convinced him to start a blog of his very own.  :D

And yes, this is a lame ploy to keep my posting streak going.

It’s Still Wednesday, Right?

Posted on Wednesday 23 April 2008

So, since I finished the BSJ, I decided to pick up an oldie-but-goodie.

The Tess Designer Yarns Microfiber Ribbon Clapotis!
HPIM0162
(oops, blurry! Sorry!)

I picked up this yarn at last year’s Maryland Sheep and Wool, and I thought I’d give a shot at getting it done for this year’s festival in, uh, ten days.

I bought three hanks of the ribbon, and I’m on the last one now.
HPIM0164

Honestly, I love the colors, I love the way it is knitting up, but I will never work with this yarn again. Winding it is a complete pain in the ass - 333 yards per hank, and you have to do it by hand. It CANNOT be done on a ballwinder. Too bad, too, because it’s REALLY pretty stuff.

Anyway, I think I’m going to get as far as I can in the straight section by next Thursday. If I haven’t hit where I need to to use up all the yarn (I weighed the increase section to know how much I used), I’ll just call it a day and start the decreases anyway. I just have a feeling that if I don’t finish this one up by this festival, it may never get done. :)

First Update!

Posted on Tuesday 22 April 2008

So, it’s Tuesday which means two things: one, I weighed in this morning, and two, I’m headed over to my friend MorninglightMama’s to work out with her. We’ve decided to do the Evil DVD together on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

I know some people suggested that I not do measurements every week, but I fully expect them not to move for a while. I just know myself well enough to know that if I figure I’ll measure once a month, I’ll forget to do it when it’s time. So, I’m just going to get in the habit of doing it all once a week.

I was doing pretty well this week - I’ve done the dvd four times so far. I thought I was doing ok - I was getting less sore after each time, but yesterday was really discouraging. I felt like I had regressed to where I was the first day - no stamina at all. I had to keep taking breaks. It was really frustrating. I mean, I don’t expect to be doing it without effort yet (or ever, really), but it would be nice to see SOME progress.

What is the most frustrating to me is that I feel (whether it is true or not) like because I’m not really sore after working out, I’m not getting as much benefit from the workouts. Which makes the inability to finish one without stopping really irritating.

OK. Enough whining. Frustration or no, I’m going to keep working on this. I’ve got a new goal, though. I AM going to keep doing this until I can get through the level one workout without breaks. And then I’ll move on to level two and repeat. And then level three. I figure I’ll be able to do level three in, oh, three years or so? :D

Now, to grab the tape measure.

Weight: 222.8 - Well, THAT moved the wrong direction… Not shocking - I haven’t been eating well.

Bust: 46 - So far, so good - no movement

Waist: 37.5 - Holy crap! That’s down an inch and a half!

Hips: 46.5 - Lost half an inch here, too!

OK, so maybe there has been a little progress after all. And honestly - I wrote all of this before I measured. I won’t deny that it has helped my mood a bit, though!
