In theory, it's all about the fiber – knitting, crocheting, sewing, and spinning – but really, it's all about my life.

Back When I Was a Tramp…

OK, not really, although my mother did ask me once or twice why I always seemed to play the trampy roles.  She didn’t totally understand that they were more FUN.

This was the second show I ever did at the Academy Theatre in Meadville, PA.  Great little community theatre, zero budget, but a good crew of enthusiastic, loyal volunteers.  This was our production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, in August 1995.  I played Mrs. Potiphar, as you will see:

The next August, we did “Gypsy”.  As far as I’m concerned, one of the best musicals ever written.  Great story, great characters, great music.  I had the AWESOME fortune of playing Miss Mazeppa.  For those who don’t know the show, Mazeppa is one of the three strippers who counsel the soon-to-be Gypsy Rose Lee about how to make your act memorable.

And no, I didn’t actually play the trumpet.  There was a guy in the wings who was playing a real one.  :)

My mom played Miss Mezzepa twice. Once at about age 30 in a variety show where they did just that one song. And again with Prince Georges Community Theater when she was in her 40s. What a hoot!

Good memories you are sparking with your remembering! :)

Love it! I was Issachar in my high school production of Joseph (we didn’t have enough guys to be the brothers, so some of us girls had to be brethren!) And I love Miss Mazeppa!

    Great job!

    Ya gotta have a gimmick!

I always loved playing the darker characters. Sluts, bitches, villainesses… they have the most fun.

I never got the singing roles because they wouldn’t let me do Wild Turkey shots before I went on the stage. Apparently my high school didn’t WANT me to sing, if they weren’t going to help a sistah out a little. Sheesh.
