Monday

How I Met Your Mother

The Big Bang Theory (ADORE this show – so excited that Jim Parsons got an Emmy nom!)

Dancing with the Stars

Castle (Mmmmm… Nathan Fillion goodness)

Tuesday

Dancing with the Stars – results show

NCIS

NCIS: Los Angeles (Loved the crossover pilot on NCIS, so I’m excited to see how the series is)

Wednesday

Law & Order:SVU

Glee (My new addiction. Hilarious, sweet, and so very familiar to me.)

Thursday

Bones

CSI

The Mentalist (Mmmmm… Simon Baker goodness)

Friday

Law & Order

Dollhouse

Wow. You think we have a procedural crime drama addiction around here? I don’t actually watch anything that airs on Saturdays or Sundays, although I’m thinking I might add Three Rivers to the lineup, if only to see if they even come close to getting my ‘Burgh right.

I already miss my summer shows like The Closer, Burn Notice, Psych, and Eureka, L&O: CI, In Plain Sight, and the newest additions to that list – Warehouse 13 and Royal Pains, even though some of them are not quite done yet.

*Edited to add the original NCIS, which I forgot to list last night, and In Plain Sight, which is one of my summer shows. Gah. I’m worse than I thought!

So, I tweeted earlier that my mom is now on Facebook (Dad has been for a while), and made a joking comment about how now I’ll need to behave. I have Twitter set up to update my FB status (Teh Lazy – I has it), and an old friend from high school was hassling me about how I’ve clearly been treading close to the line with my updates about knitting and trivia (Our team is going to Trivia Bowl 22 on the 19th!). We went back and forth a little, and pointed out that he didn’t HAVE to read my updates if he didn’t like them. He said that he did have to, because he needed the reminder that someone else’s life is more boring than his.

Now, I know he and I were kidding, but it got me thinking. From the outside, my life probably does look pretty boring. But I had a sudden realization about it – I’m happy. Like, not “just hanging in there” or “doing ok”, but genuinely happy. I’ve spent the last 11 years with a husband that I adore, and who loves me. We have a house, we’re doing ok. We’re both reasonably healthy. We have three goofy dogs and three wacky cats that make life interesting. We have amazing friends all over the place. I get to play with yarn when I want to, and indulge my creativity in the local theatre, too. I’m not Pollyanna – I know my life isn’t perfect. I’m never going to have a baby, and that sucks massively. It’s a hole in my heart that isn’t going to be filled, and I have to live with that. But Kris and I have made it through some pretty major shit in our life, and we’ve come out the other side closer and with a stronger marriage.

So, anyway, yeah. Light bulb moment du jour.

Knitting content will resume soon. I’ve got some goodies I want to show you – Twitter has been BAD for “Ooh! Shiny!” moments with stuff on Etsy.

A while back, I had some problems with spam comments on my blog, both with spam getting through and with non-spam getting filtered. So, I changed spam filters. I added a couple of plugins – one that closes comments on posts after a certain amount of time, and one that limits the number of links allowed in comments. If a comment exceeds the allowed number, it gets held until I approve it. Since the suggestions on the shrug have included a number of links, some of those have gotten held pending approval.

I received a rather hurtful email today accusing me of censoring someone’s comments because it hadn’t posted yet. I got the email that the original comment had been left as I was leaving the house to go swim, and figured I’d approve it as soon as I got home. However, this was apparently not fast enough, and so I was told in the later email (received one hour after the email from WP that the comment was pending) that the message that I “didn’t want certain people commenting” was clearly received. Considering the only comments I have EVER removed from my blog were spam, I was a bit surprised and replied, assuring this person that it was a misunderstanding and that I meant nothing of the sort. However, the reply I received indicated that this person felt I was lying about it.

I can get (and reply to) emails on my phone, but my WordPress dashboard doesn’t work particularly well on my tiny phone screen, so I can’t approve comments until I am at home on the real computer. And as I have no intention of giving up my life, I will sometimes be out of the house and away from the computer. If that is too much to deal with, well, I suggest finding another blog to read.

Oh, and for obvious reasons, comments are closed on this post.

In honor of a very sweet little boy who made me more conscious of my own use of words like “retarded” and phrases like “riding the short bus” (and therefore eliminate them), I want to spread the word about this.

From the Special Olympics site:

Spread The Word to End The Word

It is time to “Spread the Word to End the Word” and on 31 March 2009 Special Olympics is calling for a national day of awareness for America to stop and think about their use of the R-word. That R-word is not “recession,” but something more hurtful and painful – “retard.”

Wear the Spread the Word T-shirt and show your support! Click on the logo above to order yours today.

Most people don’t think of this word as hate speech, but that’s exactly what it feels like to millions of people with intellectual disabilities, their families and friends. This word is just as cruel and offensive as any other slur.

Spread the Word to End the Word will raise the consciousness of society about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the R-word and encourage people to pledge to stop using it. America will be asked to declare their support for more respectful and inclusive language, specifically that referring to those with intellectual disabilities.

Created by young people with and without intellectual disabilities, Spread the Word to End the Word is one element of Special Olympics’ vision of a world where everyone matters, where everyone is accepted and, most importantly, where everyone is valued. Leading the way in promoting acceptance of people with intellectual disabilities, Special Olympics opposes prejudice and discrimination, continuously working to dispel the negative stereotypes associated with this population — the use of the R-word being one such stereotype. In a world that has worked to eliminate pejorative racial and ethnic language such as the “N word,” among others, the R-word is gaining popularity.

On 31 March, young people across the country will lead local efforts to raise awareness and collect pledges on www.r-word.org from peers and the community to vow not to use the R-word. Actor and activist John C. McGinley, of the hit show “Scrubs,” is helping with this effort by making national media appearances on behalf of the campaign. On 2 March 2009, he appeared on “The Bonnie Hunt Show.”

Send us your plans to Spread the Word at r-word@specialolympics.org. After 31 March, let us know how your Spread the Word event went. Send a report, photos and videos to r-word@specialolympics.org.

So, N – thank you for making me a better person, and give your parents a big hug from me.

So, I spent my afternoon in the emergency room, you?

It started yesterday while I was working out like a good girl. My left foot was bothering me. I figured I had just done something, and it would work itself out.

I woke up this morning, and it was ok. By the time I was done with lunch at East Moon with Kris and our friends Irene and Jaime, it was bothering me again. Kris and I ran by the grocery store, and it was KILLING me. So, we decided I needed to get it looked at. I was worried we were looking at a stress fracture or something.

After we dropped off the groceries, we went over to the local ER (We don’t really have an urgent care around here that I’ve found, or I’d have gone there). After waiting for a ridiculously long time, I got called back . The doctor examined my foot, which only hurts if I put weight on it toward the inside. They took some x-rays, but didn’t see anything. So, they think it is plantar fasciitis. I’m not 100% convinced, because the description of where the pain appears is not right at all – my heel is fine. It hurts the side of my foot. Also, they say PF hurts more in the morning and less as the day goes on. For me, it just hurts when I step on it. Doesn’t really matter, since they didn’t do anything but write me a prescription for Motrin anyway. Whether that’s what it is or not, I’m guessing the pain is being caused my my tennis shoes not having enough support for my obnoxiously high arches. So, now the walking and workouts are on hold until I can get a better pair of shoes, and possibly some additional arch supports if needed. And I was doing REALLY well, too, dammit. I have to let my yoga teacher know when I go tomorrow, too, just so she can warn me if I’m going to be doing anything painful. (And yes, if the shoes don’t seem to help, I’ll make an appointment with my regular doctor, who will hopefully pay a little more attention when I specifically say WHERE and WHEN it hurts.)

The really annoying thing? The information they gave me on PF suggests losing weight if you are heavy. Dammit, that’s how this HAPPENED!

Oh, and while I was in the exam room waiting for them to come back with the xray results, I decided to be all Penny Karma and took this:

Nice work, guys.

And I took this the other day from the car.

Is it just me, or does the “and you” in smaller print underneath seem a little… begrudging? Like “Yeah, well, ok, you too. I suppose. If it HAS to be that way.”

And yes, I know I’m going to hell.

And, no, I do not know this because this weekend was the freaking Daylight Saving Time change (which I haaaaaaaaaate). I know this because yesterday, I did my traditional “Welcome Spring” ritual.

Most people welcome spring by doing things like gardening, or cleaning off the porch, or checking the status of the lawnmower. Me, I do it differently.

By singing.

Ever since college, the first warm-enough day of spring meant driving around with the windows down and this cranked on my car radio, singing along at the top of my lungs:

That’s right. “Zombie Jamboree” by Rockapella. The version I have is actually from a Spike Lee tv special called “Do It A Capella”, but the YouTube video from that is a little long, and the song doesn’t start until halfway through, so I linked this one instead. Gotta love the mullets on the guys, though, no? Particularly the lead singer…

Happy Monday, and happy spring!
